Employment law is designed to protect the individual's rights within the workplace.
Many employees do not understand their rights within the law, and believe that their employer, simply by it's status as a corporation, is allowed to operate in a fashion that is unjust and unfair to it's employees.
A workplace should be fair and without exploitation. A workplace should accommodate the needs of it's workers, and should treat them with respect and dignity. It's not a choice, it's the law.
Whether you are hourly-paid and in your first job, or a senior executive at the end of a glorious career, you have the right to be treated well. Mistreatment can come in many forms - not being given the same pay rate as younger colleagues, or being offered a 'golden parachute' that is not a fair value for your service, or being called names and having obstructions put in the path of you performing a religious observance or working around a disability.
